Stick out of Shotgun 5WR Trio gives you three receivers to the left running a staggered stick combo, with the two inside receivers sitting on shallow out routes underneath a deep out from the widest receiver, creating a natural triangle read against zone. To the right the slot runs a vertical seam that breaks into a deep crossing route while the outside receiver runs a quick out, giving you a two-way go against man coverage on that side. This is primarily a zone beater built to attack Cover 3 and Cover 2 flat zones with the stick triangle, but the crossing route on the right also gives you a man beater answer if the defense shows man leverage. Primary progression starts with the trio side stick concept (deep out to shallow outs) and works to the crossing route on the backside if the underneath defenders sink into the flats.
Pre-snap, check safety depth: if both safeties are deep and cornerbacks are playing off, you are likely seeing Cover 2 or Cover 3, both of which struggle with the stick triangle's three-level stretch. Watch the flat defender on the trio side immediately after the snap, if he sinks too deep trying to cover the deep out he opens up both shallow outs underneath. Man coverage shells with linebackers matched up on the crossing route are vulnerable since the route stretches horizontally and forces a rules based coverage bust in man-to-man. Nano blitzes or aggressive linebacker blitzes can be an issue since the stick routes are all underneath and quick developing routes take time to overcome hard closing user defenders, so watch for blitz indicators like linebackers creeping toward the line pre-snap. Cover 4 or pattern-match zones with disciplined linebackers sitting on hooks can shut down the stick concept if the underneath defenders read the quarterback's eyes and jump the shallow outs before the ball is thrown.
Check the defensive alignment pre-snap and identify if the linebackers are sitting flat footed in shallow zone drops, that is your green light to hit the stick concept early.
Against Cover 3, target the deep out route from the widest trio receiver since the flat defender will often be stuck between the two shallow outs and cannot cover all three levels.
If you see man coverage on the backside receiver running the crossing route, hot route him to a slight delay so he can clear the linebacker level before breaking across the field.
This play works best on third and short to third and medium since the stick concept is designed to convert distance quickly against sit-down zone coverage.
Pair this with Curl Flats or Shallow Cross from the same set to keep the defense guessing between quick game answers and deeper crossing patterns, forcing linebackers to respect multiple levels.
