WR Option out of Shotgun 5WR Trio lines up three receivers to the right (option route reader, a corner breaking outside, and an out route underneath) with two receivers stacked left running crossing deep outs. The trio side option route is the focal point: the slot man reads the underneath defender and breaks either up the seam or out to the flat based on leverage, making this a true man and zone beater in one concept. Primary read progression starts with the option route, then works to the corner route behind it before checking the backside double outs on the weak side.

Defensive Reads

Presnap, check safety depth and leverage on the trio side, a single high safety shading toward the option route often signals help over the top. Watch the cornerback aligned on the option receiver, tight press alignment invites the outside break while soft alignment invites the inside break for the reader. Post snap, key any user controlled defender sitting in the shallow hook or curl zone, that lurk threat can jump the option route if the QB is late in the progression. This play beats Cover 3 sink and Cover 1 man concepts because the option route naturally settles in the void or wins the one on one leverage battle. It struggles against Cover 2 with aggressive underneath linebackers or a well timed nano blitz off the trio side, since the option route reader has no room to sit down before the QB has to throw.

Usage Tips

Presnap, identify whether the defender aligned over the option route is playing inside or outside leverage since that dictates which way the route will break after the snap.

Against man coverage, trust the option route reader to work away from the defender's hip, it wins consistently versus press and off man alike.

Against zone shells like Cover 3 or Cover 4, look to the corner route on the trio side first since it settles into the void behind underneath zone defenders.

Use this play on second and medium or third and short to keep the sticks in reach with the option route while still having the corner as an explosive shot.

Pair this with Mtn Switch Verts or Four Verticals from the same set to condition the defense to respect the deep shots, then come back to WR Option to exploit the underneath space it creates.
