Breakdown

Four Verticals from the Shotgun 5WR Trio set sends four receivers on vertical stem routes to stretch the field horizontally and vertically, with the trio side receiver breaking into a deep post from the seam to occupy the middle of the field. The backside outside receiver runs a quick out to hold the flat defender and provide a checkdown against pressure. With five receivers out and no back in protection shown, this is a max protect passing concept built as both a Cover 2 beater (attacking the deep middle void) and a Cover 3 beater (overloading the seams against three deep defenders). Primary progression starts with the post from the trio side, then works to the outside verticals if the safety commits to the middle of the field.

Defensive Reads

Identify the safety shell before the snap. Two deep safeties split evenly signals Cover 2 or Cover 4, which invites the seam post to work into the intermediate void between levels. Single high safety alignment means Cover 1 or Cover 3. Expect the deep middle defender to widen with the post, opening one on one vertical shots outside for user controlled defenders to defend. Watch linebacker depth at the snap. Shallow linebackers or a delayed blitz signal man coverage underneath, which favors the outside verticals beating off man leverage. If the defense shows a heavy blitz package with only one deep defender, get rid of the ball to the backside quick out immediately rather than waiting on the vertical routes to develop. This play struggles against a true two high shell that stays disciplined and does not bite on the post, since that shell can rob the middle read and force low percentage outside throws into tight coverage.

Usage Tips

Call this on obvious passing downs or after a run play has softened the box, since it needs time to develop deep routes.

Check pre-snap for two deep safeties. If both safeties are shallow or cheating to one side, the post route from the trio side has room to sit down in the void.

Against single high safety looks (Cover 3 or Cover 1), immediately key the outside verticals since the seam post occupies the deep middle defender and creates one on one matchups on the numbers.

Use the quick out hot route on the backside as your answer to the blitz. If the defense brings extra rushers, get the ball out fast to that route instead of pushing through your deep progression.

Pair this play with Curl Flats or Stick from the same set to keep defenses honest. If verticals draw two deep safeties over multiple snaps, come back with shorter combos underneath to exploit vacated space.
