Breakdown
Mtn Y Shallow Cross runs a receiver in pre-snap motion across the formation before the snap, then works a classic shallow cross concept underneath a deep dig. The motion receiver on the left snaps off the line and turns a corner route up the sideline, while the inline slot receiver on the same side runs the shallow drag all the way across the field under the linebackers. On the right side the tight end or slot man breaks off a deep dig/comeback while the outside receiver runs an out route to the flat, giving you a layered read from shallow to intermediate. This is a man beater built around natural rub traffic from the shallow crosser and the motion, and the primary read progression starts with the shallow drag, moves to the dig breaking back to the middle, and finishes with the flat route and corner as late options.
Defensive Reads
Check the safety alignment before the snap, two deep safeties usually signal a zone shell that lets you sit the dig route in the soft spot between the flat defender and the deep zone. Watch how the defense reacts to the motion, if a defender shadows the motion man man to man you have a clear man beater matchup with the shallow cross and corner route. Key the middle linebacker's drop after the snap, if he sinks into a shallow zone he can jump the drag route so be ready to progress quickly to the dig or corner. Look for a lurking underneath defender sitting in a user-controlled zone, this is the biggest threat to the shallow cross and can bait a costly interception if the quarterback stares it down. Cover 3 with an aggressive flat defender can undercut the out route to the flat, so if you see that shell rotate your first read to the dig route working back to the middle of the field.
Usage Tips
Use the pre-snap motion to identify man versus zone before the snap, if the defender follows the motion man across the formation you are getting man coverage and the shallow cross becomes an easy pitch and catch.
Hot route the flat route to a flat or hitch if you see a linebacker sitting in a shallow zone drop underneath the drag, this keeps the low read clean for the quarterback.
Attack blitz-heavy defenses on early downs by getting the ball out fast on the shallow drag, the crosser clears the LOS quickly and picks up yardage before pressure arrives.
On third and medium, prioritize the dig route over the middle since it settles behind linebackers and in front of deep zone defenders for a reliable chain-mover.
