WR Screens out of the Shotgun 5WR Trio set is a designed screen pass built around a bubble screen to the outside receiver with the outside blocker releasing to convoy upfield. The near outside receiver runs a quick out to sell vertical stretch while the play side blocker climbs to the second level to clear a lane for the screen receiver. This is a classic screen call meant to bait aggressive pass rushers and man coverage into overpursuing upfield, with the primary read being the bubble screen receiver first and the shallow out route as a check down if the screen is sniffed out.
Defensive Reads
Key the play side outside linebacker or slot corner immediately at the snap, if they sit and read instead of attacking upfield they can blow up the screen before it develops. Watch for a user controlled defender spying the backfield or shuffling laterally, that is a lurk read designed to jump the bubble screen route. Zone coverage shells with a flat defender sitting underneath will shut this down quickly since the screen has nowhere to develop against numbers. Man coverage with aggressive press corners and blitzing linebackers is the ideal matchup for this play since it turns their aggression into wasted pursuit angles. If the defense shows Cover 2 or Cover 3 with the corner staying deep and a linebacker flowing outside quickly, expect the screen to get sniffed out and be ready to check down to the shallow out route instead.
Usage Tips
Call this on early downs or third and short when the defense shows heavy pressure looks like a nano blitz or edge overload, since screens punish aggressive rush lanes. Pre-snap, check for slot or outside corners playing tight man with no underlying zone defender, that is your green light to trust the blockers and hit the bubble screen immediately. If you see a linebacker or safety sitting flat footed reading the screen (a lurk defender), hot route the screen receiver to bend it wider or check it down to the shallow out instead. Pair this with Jet Sweep and QB Draw from the same 5WR Trio set to keep the defense honest on perimeter run fits, since both plays sell width and tempo similarly. Use this early in a series to bait aggressive user rushers, then come back with Four Verticals or Mtn Mesh Y-Post once the defense starts crashing hard on screens.
