Breakdown

Four Verticals Sl Out combines a classic four verts shell with a slot out breaking underneath, giving the quarterback a vertical stretch on top and a quick outlet on the sideline. The four verts push safeties deep and create seams between hash and numbers, while the Sl Out route sits down against off coverage or sags into passing lanes for an easy completion against zone drops. This is primarily a zone beater built to stress Cover 2 and Cover 3 shells, and the primary read progression starts with the deep seam receiver to the middle of the field safety, then works to the opposite seam before checking down to the slot out if the safeties squeeze the middle.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth and width since two deep safeties signal Cover 2 or Cover 4 while a single high safety signals Cover 1 or Cover 3. Watch cornerback alignment on the outside verticals, tight press coverage often means a jump ball opportunity down the sideline. Post-snap, key the middle linebacker's drop, a hard sink into the deep middle can clog the seam reads and force the quarterback to the slot out. User the deep safety and rob the seam route closest to the boundary, this is the single biggest counter to this concept. Cover 2 with disciplined corners playing the flat and safeties staying square over the top squeezes the throwing windows and shuts down the seams, forcing the checkdown. A well timed blitz that brings pressure off the edge before the seams develop can force an inaccurate throw, so respect delayed pressure packages when calling this play.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, identify whether you are facing two deep safeties or one high safety since that dictates which seam route wins. Against Cover 2, target the seam route that splits the two safeties before they can rotate over the top. Against Cover 3, work the seam away from the free safety's pre-snap leaning side. Hot route the slot out into a quick flat or speed out if the corner is playing tight man to give yourself an instant answer versus press coverage. Use this play on second and medium or third and short to long situations where defenses are more likely to sit in zone shells. Pair this call with Slants or Curl Flats earlier in a series to condition the defense into thinking underneath, then hit this vertical shot when safeties start creeping up. Follow this play up with Shallow Cross or Spacing to punish defenses that overcommit to taking away the verticals.
