Wing Flex Close is the compressed, run-first look in Pistol, built on 12 personnel with the running back stacked directly behind the quarterback in the pistol depth. Unlike the wider Pistol sets that stretch the numbers with split receivers, Wing Flex Close pulls both tight ends and the flex receiver inside the tackle box area: one tight end aligns as a wing off the edge, the other flexes just outside, and the remaining receiver closes down near the formation. That tight alignment forces the defense to either walk a safety or nickel down into the box or accept a numbers disadvantage on Wide Zone and HB Zone Wk, which is exactly the leverage battle this set is designed to win.
The pistol depth is the key mechanic. The back gets a two way read on Wide Zone without declaring a strong side, so your opponent cannot key the run direction pre-snap the way they can from a standard shotgun offset. That same neutral alignment powers the RPO menu here: RPO Read Jet Slide and Jet RPO Read Slide give you a conflict read on the flat defender, while Zone Alert WR Screen and Zone Fake Jet punish any user who overcommits an edge defender or a spinning safety. Speed Option adds a true second threat on the perimeter, which is what makes the whole package work against users who like to crash the edge with a controlled defensive end.
In the pass game, the compressed splits create natural rub and release traffic that man coverage struggles with. Mtn Fork H-Choice isolates the wing tight end on an option route against a linebacker or safety, a matchup you should be hunting every time your opponent stays in base or big personnel. PA Boot Lt, PA Boot Y Sail, and PA Flood attack the vacated flat off run action, and Mtn Dig Go's plus Mtn Slot Comeback give you the intermediate to deep answers once the safeties start playing downhill. Spacing and Stick handle third and medium against zone, and WR Under uses the tight alignment to spring a receiver across the field behind traffic.
Use pre-snap motion on the jet plays to identify coverage: if the defender travels with the motion man you have man, so go to Mtn Fork H-Choice or WR Under for the isolation and rub. If nobody follows, stay in Spacing or Stick against the zone.
Run Wide Zone and HB Zone Wk early to force your opponent into heavier personnel or to walk a safety down, then use that commitment to hit Mtn Dig Go's or Mtn Slot Comeback over the top on second and medium.
On third and short with a defender crowding the box, RPO Read Jet Slide gives you a low risk read: hand it off against a soft edge, pull and throw the slide when the flat defender chases the run action.
Save PA Boot Y Sail and PA Flood for after you have established Wide Zone. Check your protection side and consider hot routing the back to block if you see a wide edge threat or blitz indicators from the boot side.
Hot route the flexed receiver to a fade or a slot corner when you see a single high shell with the box loaded, since compressed alignment gives your receiver an inside release lane against a corner playing run support leverage.
Speed Option is your punish play against users who control the defensive end and crash inside. Pull it out when you see the same edge pressure two or three snaps in a row.
