Breakdown

PA Boot Lt is a play-action rollout out of the Pistol Wing Flex Close set that fakes the handoff and rolls the quarterback left behind the line. Off the fake, one receiver runs a deep vertical straight up the seam, a second breaks off a corner route toward the boundary from the middle of the field, and a third works an over route crossing underneath from the backside. On the play side, one receiver runs a shallow drag toward the flat while a backfield outlet releases into a short flat route to give the quarterback an immediate checkdown on the rollout. This is a play-action man beater that also stresses zone defenders on the move, with the deep vertical as the first read, the crossing over route as the intermediate answer, and the flat route as the built-in safety valve.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify single high versus two high safety shells, single high defenses are more vulnerable to the deep vertical route beating a lone deep defender. Watch linebacker depth and run fits, if they crash hard on the play fake and vacate the middle, the crossing over route will have a wide-open throwing lane behind them. Post-snap, key the flat defender and any user-controlled linebacker dropping into the boot lane, a disciplined flat defender can jump the drag route and the checkdown flat route simultaneously. Cover 3 with a hard-spinning safety to the play side can take away both the vertical and the corner route, forcing the quarterback to hold the ball longer than the protection allows. Man coverage with no safety help over the top gets exposed by the deep vertical, but a disciplined deep third defender or a robber sitting in the middle of the field can undercut the over route before it develops.

Usage Tips

Use this out of run-heavy personnel looks so the play-action fake actually holds linebackers and safeties for a beat.

Attack second and short or first and ten situations where defenses are primed to bite on run action.

Check the safety alignment before the snap, if you see two high safeties rolling down late, expect a bracket on the deep vertical and prioritize the crossing over route instead.

Hot route the drag into a quick out if you see man coverage with a corner sitting hard on the flat, this gives you a faster answer against aggressive press corners.

Pair this with Wide Zone or HB Zone Wk earlier in a series so the run action sells and defenders start flowing hard, then punish overaggressive linebackers with this rollout off the same look.
