Wide Zone is an outside zone run play out of Pistol Wing Flex Close using 12 personnel with two TEs attached to the formation for extra blocking surface. The diagram shows the entire offensive line and both TEs flowing laterally to stretch the defense before the HB presses the edge, with the widest run path indicated by the red arrow bending upfield. This is a zone run scheme designed to hit the alley once defenders overrun the play flow, and the primary read progression is a backside-to-frontside track: identify the first cutback lane, then bounce outside if the edge is sealed.
Watch linebacker depth at the snap since fast-flowing LBs open up an easy cutback lane for the ball carrier. Overloaded run fits with a heavy box (eight or more defenders) or a run blitz off the edge can blow up the zone stretch before it develops. Spy or lurk defenders sitting inside can jump the cutback read, so disciplined gap integrity from the defensive line is key to stopping this. Man coverage on the perimeter with aggressive corner run support tends to shut down the bounce-outside option. Zone shells that keep safeties deep and let linebackers flow hard to the play side are the most vulnerable to the cutback lane this play is designed to hit.
Attack light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the tackle box before the snap since the extra TE gives you a numbers advantage on the perimeter.
Use the HB's jump cut or spin move once you cross the tackle box to punish overpursuing linebackers flowing hard to the play side.
Pair this with Zone Fake Jet or Jet RPO Read Slide from the same set to keep defenses honest on run fits and force LBs to hesitate.
Run this on early downs (first and ten or second and short) to stay ahead of the chains and set up PA Boot Lt or PA Flood off the same look later in the series.
Against aggressive fronts, motion into the formation pre-snap to bait linebackers into overcommitting, then let the zone stretch create the cutback.
