Zone Alert WR Screen is a quick-hitting screen concept out of Pistol Wing Flex Close (12 personnel) designed to get the ball out of the backfield fast and into space on the perimeter. The diagram shows the outside receiver releasing upfield before sitting down as the bubble target while the slot receiver blocks out to spring him, with a lone receiver on the opposite side running a vertical alert route as a built-in hot read if the defense sells out on the screen. The primary read progression is screen first: check the numbers and leverage of the blockers, and if the screen is covered or blitzed off the edge, alert to the vertical route on the backside for a big-play window against overplayed run or screen defense.
Identify the corner and slot defender alignment before the snap. If the corner is playing off at seven or more yards with outside leverage, the screen has a soft cushion to work with. Watch the flat defender's first step after the snap. If he sits and reads run or squats hard on the screen, get the ball out before he can jump the throwing lane. Man coverage with press corners jumping the bubble route will blow this play up quickly, so be ready to alert to the vertical route if you see man match indicators pre-snap such as a corner lined up inside shading or a safety cheating over the top. Zone coverage that rotates hard to the screen side, like a Cover 3 buzz or Cover 2 sink, can also close throwing lanes fast, so track the flow of the underneath zone defenders immediately after the snap. Blitz packages that send extra rushers away from the screen side are the best matchup for this concept since it removes numbers from the perimeter defense.
Pre-snap, count defenders to the screen side. If you see two or fewer defenders outside the numbers, the screen is live and you should snap and throw it quickly. Watch for blitz indicators such as a linebacker or corner creeping toward the line pre-snap, since that confirms the screen will have room to develop behind the rush. If the defense shows a hard roll to the screen side or a cornerback sitting flat footed at five yards, hot route the backside receiver's vertical alert route deeper or into a slant to counter aggressive flat defenders. Use this play on early downs (first and ten, second and short) to keep the defense honest against your run-heavy calls from this same formation. Pair it in a sequence with Wide Zone or HB Zone Wk to sell the same personnel and alignment, then hit this screen when the defense starts flowing hard to stop the run.
