Breakdown

Mtn Dig Go's is a deep-shot pass concept out of Pistol 12 personnel that stacks two vertical clearing routes on the outside with a dig sitting underneath from the slot. Pre-snap motion sends the outside receiver in a jet action across the formation on a flat/drag route to the opposite sideline, while both outside receivers on the strongside run Go routes straight up the numbers to take the top off the coverage. The middle receiver runs a dig that sits down in the void created by the two verticals, and the primary read progression starts with the motion man for a free access throw against man coverage before working to the dig and finally the two Go routes as the deep shot option.

Defensive Reads

Key the safety alignment before the snap, a two-high shell tips zone coverage and should push your eyes immediately to the dig sitting between the safeties. Watch the flow of the linebacker or corner assigned to the jet motion man, if he trails across the formation it confirms man coverage and the crosser is open for an easy pickup. Beware of Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells with sound deep help, both Go routes will likely be taken away and the offense must live on the underneath dig and motion route. Post-snap, track any user-controlled defender sinking into the dig's throwing lane, a disciplined lurk defender in that zone can bait an interception if the quarterback locks on late. This concept is vulnerable to disciplined zone blitzes that drop a defender into the shallow crossing lane, so recognize five-man pressure with underneath zone coverage and be ready to check down or extend the play.

Usage Tips

Use the pre-snap motion to identify man versus zone before the snap, if the defender follows the motion man across the formation you have a clean man beater read to the flat.

Against single-high safety shells, prioritize the dig route since the two Go routes will occupy both deep defenders and open the intermediate window.

Hot route the underneath crosser to a quick out if you see a corner blitz or nano blitz look off the edge to get the ball out fast.

Pair this play with Mtn Slot Comeback or PA Boot Y Sail in your play-calling sequence so defenses respect both the deep shot and the shorter timing throws, keeping safeties honest.

Best called on second or third and medium to long when you need to stress a defense vertically and force a coverage bust for an explosive gain.
