Zone Fake Jet is a play-action pass out of Pistol Wing Flex Close (12 personnel) that sells jet motion and zone run action before releasing routes. The diagram shows one receiver running a deep vertical up the numbers on the backside while the outside receiver on the play side runs a corner route toward the sideline, with the offensive line sliding in a zone blocking pattern to protect the fake. Underneath, a checkdown option sits in the flat off the fake jet action. The primary read progression starts with the deep vertical to see if the play fake pulls the safety down, then works to the corner route breaking outside, and finally checks down to the flat receiver if both are covered. This is a play-action shot play designed to punish teams that bite on the jet sweep fake and creep linebackers or safeties toward the line of scrimmage.
Read the deep safety first: if he stays home over the top instead of stepping up on the fake, the defense is likely disciplined against play-action and the vertical route will be covered. Check linebacker depth before the snap, shallow linebackers who key hard on jet motion are the ones this play exploits with the corner route and vertical shot. Post-snap, watch for a user-controlled defender flying downhill on the run fake, that is your cue the vertical and corner routes will have space behind him. This play struggles against zone shells with a true two-high safety look that stays disciplined, since both deep routes get squeezed by sideline help. Man coverage with aggressive underneath linebackers is where this play wins most, especially if the defense shows blitz and vacates the flat, leaving the checkdown wide open.
Use this on early downs like first or second and short to mid distance when defenses are more likely to respect the run and jet motion fake.
Watch the safety alignment pre-snap: if you see a single high safety cheating toward the box or corners playing tight to the line expecting run support, this is a green light to fire the shot play.
Motion the jet man pre-snap and check the linebacker reaction, if they flow hard with the motion it confirms they are keying run action and the play-action window will be wide open.
Hot route the flat receiver into a quick out if you diagnose a blitz, giving the quarterback a fast release valve against man pressure.
Pair this with Wide Zone and HB Zone Wk earlier in a series to condition the defense into run reads, then dial up Zone Fake Jet to cash in on the exact same run action.
