Pistol Wing Close is the 12 personnel condensed look inside the Pistol family, and it plays completely differently from the spread out Pistol sets that stretch the field with three and four wide alignments. You get a tight end attached to the line, a second tight end as a wing just off his outside hip, and a single receiver isolated to the opposite side, with the back sitting four yards behind the quarterback instead of offset in a shotgun alignment. That depth matters in Madden because it gives you true two way run reads without the pre-snap tell that an offset back creates, so HB Stretch, HB Zone, and Cheat HB Counter all attack either direction from the same shell.
The wing alignment is what makes this set a problem for defenses. Because both tight ends sit inside the numbers, defenses generally answer with base personnel and often walk a safety or extra linebacker down toward the closed side, which leaves your isolated receiver in a true one on one look. Flanker Dig and PA Cheat Deep Post Stop are built to punish that, giving you a clean single side read against man coverage with no traffic and no help defender in the picture. If the defense stays balanced instead, the closed side turns into a numbers advantage for the run game, and RPO Power Alert Outs lets you read that count post-snap rather than guessing.
The play-action library is where Wing Close separates from the rest of the Pistol formation. PA Boot Levels, PA Boot Lt, and PA Stretch Shot all sell the same downhill run action that HB Slam and HB Zone establish, then move the quarterback off the spot and away from interior pressure. Cheat TE Screen and Z Spot round out the set as change of pace answers, and Z Spot in particular gives you a legitimate zone beater that floods a single hook zone from a formation the defense expects to run. The 3DRB, Gadget, and Power HB tags mean this set rewards a back who can catch out of the flat and a tight end room with real route running ability.
Establish HB Zone and HB Slam early so the play-action package sells, then hit PA Boot Levels once you see linebackers stepping downhill on the run read.
Check the open side coverage pre-snap: a corner with outside leverage and no safety help means Flanker Dig or PA Cheat Deep Post Stop is your read, hard press means audible to the run.
Motion the wing tight end across before the snap to identify man or zone, then hot route him to a drag or flat if you diagnosed man coverage.
Use Cheat TE Screen after two or three cheat looks have gone to Cheat HB Counter, since the shared motion trains users to jump the run.
On third and medium inside the twenty, Z Spot is the highest percentage call because it attacks the hook window that condensed defenses have to vacate.
Against heavy box counts on second and short, RPO Power Alert Outs gives you a free read and an outlet outside if the defense loads the interior.
