HB Zone out of Pistol Wing Close is an inside zone run play with the tight ends and offensive line flowing laterally to create a wall for the running back to press and read. The two wide receivers stay wide with no route assignments shown, occupying the corners on the perimeter without blocking or running combo routes. This is a pure zone run play designed to attack cutback lanes, with the primary read being the frontside double team at the point of attack and the backside cutback lane if the defense overpursues.
Watch linebacker depth pre-snap since stacked or crashing linebackers signal a run blitz that this zone scheme can gash if the cutback lane opens. Identify one high versus two high safety shells since single high defenses often bring an extra man into the box, making the cutback more valuable against overaggressive fits. Post-snap, key the defensive tackles and ends for gap integrity, since penetrating fronts can be countered by pressing backside instead of the called frontside gap. User-controlled defenders flowing hard to the play side create natural cutback lanes so trust the backside blocking and be ready to plant and cut. Teams that load the box with eight defenders or send a nano blitz through the A gap can blow this play up quickly, so have a hot route or check play ready in short yardage or predictable run downs.
Run this out of 12 personnel to bait base fronts and light boxes before defenses can substitute into nickel or dime looks.
Check the box count pre-snap and if the defense has six or more in the box, consider hot routing a receiver or bailing to a play-action shot to punish the aggression.
Use the zone blocking flow to set up HB Stretch later in the series since both plays start with similar backfield action but attack different lanes.
Pair this with Cheat HB Counter to keep linebackers honest, since both plays use similar mesh points but hit opposite gaps.
Against teams that key run fits hard with linebackers, patience is key so let the zone flow develop and press the hole rather than forcing it upfield immediately.
