PA Boot Lt is a play-action rollout out of Pistol Wing Close 12 personnel that pulls the offensive line to sell run and moves the QB pocket to the left. The concept sends three receivers to the rollout side: the outside receiver runs a deep corner route breaking to the boundary, the TE from the wing works a deep crosser flattening across the middle underneath that corner, and a third route sits shallow as an in-cut drag under both. On the backside, a receiver runs a shallow drag away from the rollout, giving the QB a checkdown against pressure. The primary read starts with the deep corner route, works down to the crossing TE in the middle voids, and finishes with the underneath drag or backside checkdown if the boot gets contained.
Watch linebacker depth and flow at the snap. If they bite hard on the play-action fake, the crossing TE and underneath drag will be wide open in the vacated middle zones. Identify the rollout side cornerback pre-snap. Aggressive press corners can be beaten deep by the corner route if they overplay the flat. Zone coverages with a deep half safety rolled to the play side shut this down fastest since that safety can sit on the corner route. Post-snap, track any user-controlled defender flowing with the QB on the rollout. A disciplined spy or contain defender takes away both the run threat and the throwing lanes. Man coverage with no safety help over the top on the play side is the biggest liability, especially against a fast outside receiver on the corner route.
Use pre-snap motion or a hard count to bait linebackers into run fits before the boot action develops, since the play-action sell is the core of this design.
Check safety depth before the snap. Two-high shells with soft corners are ideal because the deep corner route has room to work outside the numbers.
If you see man coverage, hot route the underneath drag into a quicker breaking route to beat off man leverage before the pocket fully rolls.
Throw off your rollout keys: work the corner route first, then float the throw to the crossing TE if the safety jumps the corner.
Pair this with HB Zone or Cheat HB Counter earlier in a series to get defenders flowing downhill, then hit PA Boot Lt off the same look for a explosive shot play.
