Watch the play side defensive end and outside linebacker pre-snap. If they are crashing hard inside on every snap, this counter action will gash them once the kickout block seals them wide. Key the middle linebacker's initial step. A downhill, aggressive linebacker who flows too fast toward the play side guard's initial pull is easy to cut back away from. Identify single-high versus two-high safety shells before the snap. Single-high alignments often mean the safety is filling the alley late, giving the counter extra room to bounce outside. Look for a defense stacking the box with eight or more defenders. That alignment, especially with linebackers already at run depth, is the look most likely to blow this play up before the pullers even clear. Post-snap, track any user-controlled defender flying downhill on the counter step. A disciplined user lurking in the backside cutback lane can diagnose the counter action and blow it up for a loss.
