Breakdown

Flood out of Pistol Trips stacks three routes into one side of the field, with the outside receiver running a deep vertical, the middle trips receiver running a corner route toward the sideline, and the inside slot receiver sitting on a flat route underneath. The backside receiver runs a deep dig across the field as a hot read against man coverage or if the flood side gets taken away. This is a classic Cover 3 beater that stretches the deep third defender and the flat defender vertically, and the primary read progression goes corner to flat to backside dig.

Defensive Reads

Identify a single high safety pre-snap, this indicates Cover 3 and confirms the flood concept will have a natural window to attack. Watch the flat defender after the snap, if he sinks too deep chasing the corner route the flat receiver will be wide open for a quick completion. If corners are pressed at the line with two deep safeties, expect Cover 2 or man coverage, in that case prioritize the backside dig over the flood side. User controlled defenders sitting in the deep third or playing lurk in the middle of the field can jump the corner route, so look off the safety before committing to that throw. Disguised zone blitzes that drop a defensive lineman into the flat can take away the underneath route, so be ready to climb the pocket and hit the corner or dig against a five man rush.

Usage Tips

Diagnose the coverage shell pre-snap by checking safety depth, a single high safety with corners playing off usually signals Cover 3 and this play is a great call.

Key the flat defender first, if he widens with the flat route the corner window opens behind him for an easy pitch and catch.

Use the backside dig as your answer versus man coverage or when the trips side is jumped by an aggressive zone defender.

Pair this with Slants or Inside Cross from the same formation to keep the defense honest on horizontal stretches before hitting them with the vertical flood shot.

Best called on second and medium to second and long when you want a chunk play but still have a checkdown safety valve underneath.
