HB Slam is a downhill dive run out of Pistol Trips 11 personnel, with the HB aligned behind the QB for a quick mesh point and a hard interior hit. The diagram shows the three trips receivers running vertical stems to clear out coverage while the offensive line blocks straight ahead with no pulling linemen, indicating a gap scheme dive designed to hit the A or B gap fast. This is a pure run play with no play-action or RPO read attached, and the primary read progression for the HB is to press the mesh point and read the first down lineman's block before deciding to bounce or stick it up the middle.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check the box count and safety depth, if both safeties are deep and the box is light this play hits quickly for positive yardage. Watch the Mike linebacker's alignment, if he is stacked tight behind the nose or shows blitz intent, this run gets cut off before it develops. Zone coverages that keep linebackers reading run fits tend to struggle against the quick mesh point, since flow defenders have to diagnose the dive fast. Man coverage on the trips side does not directly affect this run, but if the defense sends extra defenders from the slot into the box on a scrape exchange, the dive lane disappears. Post-snap, look for defensive tackles crashing hard down the line, since a well timed inside blitz or gap exchange call can blow up HB Slam before the back reaches the line of scrimmage.
Usage Tips
Call HB Slam on early downs when the defense shows a light box with six or fewer defenders to exploit the numbers advantage at the point of attack.
Check the linebacker depth pre-snap, if the Mike is sitting shallow near the line this play will hit slower, so consider audibling to HB Dive or HB Zone Wk instead.
Use the trips receivers as window dressing, since their vertical releases can pull safeties out of the box and open up the interior run lane.
Pair this play with RPO Alert Bubble and RPO Zone Alert Bubble in the same personnel to keep defenses honest, forcing them to respect both the dive and the perimeter bubble read.
Avoid calling this against stacked fronts or aggressive nano blitz packages since there is no pulling protection to counter interior penetration, in those spots lean on HB Slip Screen or PA Boot to slow the pass rush.
