HB Slam is a downhill dive run out of Pistol Trips with 11 personnel, designed to hit the interior gap quickly behind the fullback-style lead blocking of the offensive line. The diagram shows the three trips receivers running vertical stems to clear out linebackers and safeties, while the HB takes a direct handoff and attacks the A or B gap right off the mesh point. This is a run play, not a play-action or RPO look, and the primary read is the interior gap: the HB presses the line, reads the down blocks up front, and cuts off the first color he sees from the defensive line's leverage.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check linebacker depth and alignment: stacked or crashed linebackers signal they are keying the dive and will fill the A or B gap fast. Watch for a single high safety shell (Cover 3 or Cover 1) versus two deep safeties (Cover 2 or Cover 4), since a single high look means less run support over the top and more room to cut the run outside the initial gap. Post-snap, key the play side defensive tackle and linebacker fit: if they are getting double-teamed or washed down, the HB should stick to the called gap, but if you see an unblocked defender flash quickly off the edge, bail to a cutback lane. This run is vulnerable to gap-and-a-half or heavy interior blitz packages, especially nano blitzes that send extra defenders through the A gap before the mesh point completes. If the defense shows blitz with linebackers creeping to the line pre-snap, consider hot-routing one of the trips receivers into a quick option or motioning to check into a different play, since a well-timed interior blitz can blow up HB Slam before the back gets vertical.

Usage Tips

Use HB Slam on early downs (1st and 2nd and short to medium) when you want to stay ahead of the chains without exposing the QB to unnecessary risk. Check the box count pre-snap: if the defense has six or fewer in the box, this play has a numbers advantage and the interior gap should open up quickly. Motion or shift the trips receivers if you see man coverage rolled down into the box, since their vertical stems will occupy defenders and prevent extra run support. Pair HB Slam with RPO Alert Bubble or RPO Zone Alert Bubble in the same set to punish defenses that crowd the box, since the bubble read gives you an instant answer if the linebacker or slot defender bites hard on the dive action. Sequence HB Slam early in a drive to set up PA Ctr Waggle or PA Boot later, since the play-action concepts off center run action will hold linebackers if they respect the interior dive.
