HB Slip Screen out of Pistol Trips is a designed screen play where the outside receivers and slot run vertical and comeback breaking routes to clear out the underneath defenders and occupy the deep coverage while the HB slips out to the flat behind a wall of releasing linemen. The three trips receivers push straight up the field (with the outside trips receiver breaking back outside) to drag linebackers and corners downfield, leaving the HB isolated with blockers in space. This is a screen pass designed to bait an aggressive pass rush or blitz, and the primary read is the HB in the flat as soon as he catches the ball, letting the blocking up front develop and create a running lane.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing a heavy blitz package or overload look, since this play thrives against aggressive man or blitz-heavy fronts. Key the middle linebacker depth and flow, if he stays home and reads the backfield instead of dropping into coverage he can blow up the screen before it develops. Watch corner and safety alignment on the trips side, soft zone shells with defenders reading routes tend to leak defenders back to the screen quickly and shut it down. Post-snap, user any defender with eyes in the backfield and get him to the flat immediately to disrupt the HB before the blockers set up. This play struggles against zone coverages with disciplined linebackers who sit and read the quarterback, so avoid calling it into Tampa 2 or spy-heavy defenses that key the backfield.

Usage Tips

Call this against defenses that show blitz pressure pre-snap since the aggressive rush actually helps the screen develop by removing defenders from the throwing lane.

Watch for user linebackers spying the backfield or sitting on screens, if you see a defender staring into the backfield at the snap, check to a different play or hot route the HB into a checkdown release.

Use this play on early downs or after showing HB Draw and HB Dive from the same formation so the defense respects the run fake and bites on the blocking action up front.

Pair this call with RPO Alert Bubble or Bubble Screen in the same drive to condition the defense to react to quick throws, then punish overaggressive flow to the flat with this slip screen.

Snap the ball quickly after the play call to limit the defense's ability to diagnose the screen through pre-snap motion or shifts, and avoid calling this on obvious passing downs where defensive coordinators sit on screens.
