PA Comeback out of Pistol Trips shows a play-action fake to the back followed by a five wide route tree read from left to right. The backside single receiver runs a deep out and up while the three trips receivers stack vertical releases, with the outside trips receiver breaking down into a comeback route at the top of his stem and the tight end (in red) working a skinny post from the inline alignment. This is a man beater built off the comeback route creating separation against trailing corners, with the primary read starting on the tight end's post before working out to the comeback if the underneath defender bites on the play-action fake.

Defensive Reads

Read the safety alignment before the snap, a two high shell with soft corners is where the comeback route thrives against man or off zone. Watch the flow of the linebackers post-snap, if they bite hard on the play-action fake the tight end's post route will be wide open in the middle of the field. Identify press man corners on the trips side pre-snap, since aggressive press coverage can jump the comeback route timing if the defender reads your quarterback's eyes. Look for a user-controlled defender sitting in the shallow flat or spying the play-action fake, this lurk threat can undercut the comeback break if you telegraph the throw. Beware of Cover 3 zone drops where the flat defender sinks into the comeback window, forcing you to climb the progression to the tight end post instead.

Usage Tips

Sell the run fake by holding the animation out before pulling into your drop back progression, since defenders that bite on the play-action open up the comeback route immediately.

Use this on second and medium or third and short to long when defenses expect run action out of Pistol personnel.

Check the corner depth pre-snap, if the trips corner is playing off coverage the comeback route will sit down in the window for an easy completion.

Hot route the backside single receiver into a curl if you see a single high safety cheating toward the trips side, giving you a quick outlet away from the numbers.

Pair this play with HB Dive or HB Zone Wk in your call sequence so the defense respects the run fake, then use PA Comeback to punish linebackers stepping up.
