Breakdown

HB Stretch out of Pistol Trips is an outside zone run play designed to get the running back moving laterally before deciding on a cutback lane. The play diagram shows all three trips receivers running vertical routes to occupy the deep defenders and clear space outside, while the offensive line flows in a zone blocking scheme to the play side with the HB taking a lateral path before pressing the edge. This is a run play, not a screen or play-action, and the primary read progression is the HB reading the flow of the play side defensive end and linebackers to decide between bouncing outside or cutting back inside based on the first inside blocker's leverage.

Defensive Reads

Watch the play side defensive end pre-snap, since a wide alignment forces the HB to commit to a tighter cutback lane earlier. Identify whether the linebackers are stacked tight to the box or spread out in space, because a scraping linebacker who reads zone flow quickly can blow up the cutback lane. Look for safety rotation and shell alignment before the snap, since a single high safety leaves less help in the alley against the stretch action. Post-snap, key the play side cornerback's leverage on the outside trips receiver, as an aggressive jump on the vertical route can open an easy cutback read for the ball carrier. This play struggles against gap-exchange run blitzes and aggressive edge crash calls, so if the defense shows a heavy run blitz look, be ready to bail into a quick pass concept instead.

Usage Tips

Use HB Stretch on early downs like first and ten or second and short to stay ahead of the chains and keep the defense honest against the run. Check the defensive front pre-snap for a heavy box or overloaded play side edge, since Stretch works best against light boxes where the zone can flow without extra defenders in the alley. Pair this play with HB Dive and HB Counter from the same set so the defense has to respect both interior and outside zone tendencies, making them slower to fill gaps. If the defense is crashing hard to the play side, hot route the HB to cut back earlier or set up a future call to Read Option or RPO Zone Alert Bubble to punish overaggressive linebackers. Motion or shift the trips receivers pre-snap sparingly, since their vertical stems already stretch the defense horizontally and clear the alley for the cutback lane.
