Slants out of Pistol Trips runs a three level slant concept from the trips side while the backside X runs a quick out breaking away from the formation. The two inside trips receivers cut on quick slants underneath while the outside trips receiver pushes vertical before angling in over the top, stacking three horizontal windows against the defense. This is a man beater at heart since the sharp slant angles create instant separation against man leverage, but it also holds up against soft zone thanks to the layered depth. The primary read progression starts with the inside slant, works to the second slant for a natural rub, and works out to the backside out route if the trips side is jumped.

Defensive Reads

Check safety depth presnap, a single high shell tells you the middle of the field is more vulnerable to the double slant rub from trips. Watch the corners over the trips receivers, press man alignment is a green light to fire the inside slant immediately since leverage favors the route angle. Post snap key the underneath linebackers, if they sink hard into the slant lanes instead of widening with the flow, come off to the backside out for an easy conversion. Cover 3 and Cover 4 shells with disciplined zone drops can clog the slant windows, so look for the flat defender squeezing down before committing to the throw. Beware of a user controlled defender sitting in the shallow zone or lurking on the rub route, this is the biggest threat to jump the inside slant and turn it into a pick six.

Usage Tips

Presnap identify whether the defense is showing man or zone based on trips alignment, since press man corners get beat instantly by the slant angles.

If you see a single high safety with corners playing outside leverage, throw the inside slant immediately off the snap before underneath defenders can squeeze the window.

Use the backside out route as a built in answer to trips side blitzes or when the defense rolls extra help toward the three receiver side.
