Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check linebacker depth: if the Mike and Sam are stacked tight to the line expecting run, this draw loses its blocking angle advantage. Key the defensive ends and edge rushers, since aggressive upfield rush is what makes this draw hit for big yardage, while patient rushers who stay home shut it down. Post-snap, look for a user-controlled defender spying the QB or sitting in the middle of the field, since a spy defeats the delayed hand off design immediately. Man coverage with off corners tends to open cutback lanes because underneath defenders are focused on receivers instead of run fits. Zone blitz packages that drop a rusher into a shallow zone can jump the draw lane, so respect any pre-snap disguise where an edge defender bails into coverage.
Usage Tips
Call this on early downs or in second and long situations where defenders are geared up to rush the passer off the pistol dropback look.
Watch pre-snap for defensive ends and outside linebackers crashing hard off the edge, since their aggressive first step is exactly what this draw is designed to exploit.
Use manual control on the HB to press the play side hole first, then bounce to the cutback lane if the frontside is clogged by a spy or a linebacker sitting in the box.
Pair this with PA Ctr Waggle or PA Boot from the same Trips Pistol formation so the defense sees similar backfield action and cannot key run versus pass presnap.
Avoid calling this against a defense that has shown QB spy or delayed zone blitz looks recently, since those defenders sit and read the mesh point instead of rushing upfield.
