Breakdown

HB Dive out of Pistol Trips is a straight downhill run play with the HB lined up behind the QB and three receivers stacked to one side. The offensive line blocks a standard gap scheme up front, with the play designed to hit the direct middle of the formation as fast as possible after the mesh point. This is a pure run play with no route combo to read, and the primary read is the initial gap: the HB keys the play side A or B gap based on how the defensive line and linebackers flow, cutting off his blockers' hips if the initial hole is clogged.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, count the box defenders and check linebacker depth: if you see six or more in the box with linebackers sitting shallow, this play will struggle unless you have a favorable blocking angle. Check safety alignment relative to the trips side; if a safety cheats down to help against the run, that is your cue to switch to a play-action or RPO instead. Post-snap, watch for a quick trigger from the middle linebacker on run flow, since a fast downhill fill from a user controlled backer is the primary defender that shuts this play down. This play beats light boxes and zone-heavy fronts that are worried about the trips side receivers, but it gets stuffed by gap-sound run defenses and aggressive nano blitz packages up the middle. If you see a heavy blitz look with defenders crashing the interior gaps immediately, be ready to check into a quick hot route or bail to a different play at the line.

Usage Tips

Call this on early downs when you need a quick, low risk gain to stay ahead of schedule, especially first and second and short or medium distance. Use the Trips alignment pre-snap to bait defenses into rotating a safety or nickel toward the passing strength, opening up the box for a numbers advantage on the interior. Motion is not shown here, but pair this play in your call sheet with HB Slip Screen and RPO Alert Bubble out of the same formation so the defense has to respect the perimeter before you gash them inside. Snap the ball quickly after the mesh to prevent user linebackers from diagnosing and closing the dive lane. If the defense stacks the box with extra defenders after seeing HB Dive on tape, switch to Read Option or PA Boot from this same set to keep the same formation but attack a different area.
