Breakdown
HB Zone Wk is an inside zone run out of Pistol Trips that puts the HB slightly weak of the QB for a lateral zone-blocking track. The offensive line flows in unison to the play side, double teaming the first down lineman and climbing to linebackers, while the three trips receivers stay uninvolved as decoys to pull defenders out of the box. This is a pure zone run play, not a play-action or RPO, and the primary read is the HB reading the double team block on the play side double, then bending to the cutback lane if the backside linebacker flows too hard.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, count the box defenders and check if the Mike linebacker is stacked over the frontside guard, that alignment signals a hard fill toward the zone flow. Watch for a crashing defensive end or 3-technique slanting hard playside, that is the trigger for the HB to cut back against the grain. User-controlled linebackers who key the mesh point immediately will shoot gaps, so look for backside cutback lanes when the Mike bites on flow fast. Man coverage on the trips side with no extra run support usually leaves light boxes, ideal for this call. Stacked fronts or a safety cheating down into the box pre-snap are the clearest signs to check to a different run concept, an RPO tag, or a different play entirely.
Usage Tips
Check the box count before the snap, if you see six or fewer defenders in the box this is an easy call against light fronts.
Use the trips alignment to bait the defense into rotating a safety or nickel out of the box, then attack the vacated lane.
Pair this with HB Dive and HB Stretch in the same set so defenders cannot key run fits off formation tendency alone.
Mix in PA Boot or PA Ctr Waggle from the same personnel and formation to freeze linebackers who start sitting on the zone run.
Best used on early downs, especially first and ten or second and short, when defenses are more likely to run base fronts instead of stacked run blitzes.
Take what the zone blocking gives you, do not force a predetermined hole, trust the natural cutback if the frontside gets clogged.
