Breakdown

HB Zone Wk is an inside zone run out of Pistol Trips with 11 personnel, weak side variant that sends the offensive line flowing to the weak side while the fullback or lead blocker seals the edge. The three trips receivers stay uninvolved as pass targets and simply hold the defense wide with their alignment, leaving the HB to read the zone blocking scheme up front. This is a pure run play designed to attack the weak side gap, with the primary read being the playside combo block at the point of attack, then bouncing outside if the backside cutback lane opens.

Defensive Reads

Watch linebacker depth and flow pre-snap, if they are stacked tight to the weak side this run gets clogged quickly. Look for safety rotation toward the trips side, if both safeties cheat that direction the weak side alley is wide open for a cutback. Beware of a nano blitz or edge defender crashing hard down the weak side, this can blow up the play before the HB reaches the line. Man coverage on the trips receivers with no extra run support usually means light numbers in the box, favoring the runner. User controlled linebackers sitting in the hole reading the mesh point are the biggest threat, if you see the user flow immediately to the play side, bounce it outside instead of forcing it inside.

Usage Tips

Run this out of Pistol Trips on early downs when you want to keep the defense honest before dialing up RPO Alert Bubble or RPO Zone Alert Bubble off the same look.

Check the box count pre-snap, if the defense has six or more in the box, consider bailing to X Spot or Bubble Screen instead since the numbers favor the pass.

Use the trips side alignment to bait defenses into rolling coverage or shifting the second level, then hit the weak side run where the linebackers are lighter.

Manually control the HB through the mesh point and trust the zone blocking, pressing the line of scrimmage before deciding whether to bounce outside or cut back.

Pair this with HB Dive and HB Draw in the same formation to keep linebacker flow guessing and set up PA Ctr Waggle or PA Boot off the run action later in the drive.
