Breakdown

PA Boot Lt is a play-action rollout out of Pistol Trips that pulls the QB to the left edge behind zone flow blocking, giving him a run pass option to the flat or downfield through the progression. From the trips side, the three receivers stack into a deep cross, a deep out, and an underneath out along the sideline, while the backside TE runs a corner route from the strong side that becomes the primary read on the boot. The RB releases into the flat on the play side as a checkdown and outlet against blitz pressure. This is a play-action boot designed to hold linebackers and safeties with run fake, then attack the flat to intermediate levels once the QB rolls, making it a strong zone beater against teams that spin down to stop the run.

Defensive Reads

Look for linebackers stepping up hard on the run fake at the snap, if they bite the corner route and flat will be wide open behind them. Watch the flat defender assigned to the play side, if he sits and squats on the underneath out the corner route over the top becomes your best answer. Identify user controlled defenders spying the QB on the rollout, a lurking linebacker or safety flowing with the boot can jump the flat or corner route so have your checkdown to the RB ready. Cover 3 with an aggressive flat defender is the toughest shell against this concept since it clogs the boot rollout and takes away easy yardage. Man coverage with no safety help over the top gets exposed by the deep cross and deep out combo on the backside, since defenders in man will get picked off by the route stem.

Usage Tips

Call this on early downs like first or second and medium when defenses are keying run to sell the play-action fake harder.

Check the safety alignment pre-snap, if you see two high safeties rotate down at the snap that is confirmation the boot flat and corner route will have room underneath.

Hot route the underneath out to a flat route if you are getting immediate flat defender leverage that clogs the boot lane, this keeps the RB clean as your checkdown.

Sequence this behind HB Stretch or HB Zone Wk earlier in the drive so the run fake actually freezes linebackers, the more you establish the zone run tag the more this boot hits explosive.

Pair with PA Ctr Waggle later in a series since both use similar run action but attack opposite edges, this keeps defenders guessing on which way the QB is rolling.
