Breakdown

Verticals out of Pistol Trips sends four receivers vertically up the field, with the three trips receivers running straight seams and the backside X running a go route up the sideline, while the slot receiver from the trips side breaks his vertical into a corner route near the numbers. The HB stays in to help protect or checks out into a shallow route depending on the blitz, giving the quarterback a clean pocket to work through his reads. This is a classic Four Verts concept built to attack Cover 2 and Cover 3 shells by overloading the deep safeties and stretching the zone drops horizontally, with the primary read starting on the backside single receiver go route before working inside to the seams and finally to the corner breaking route.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth and spacing, since a rotated single high safety signals Cover 3 while two safeties split wide signals Cover 2 or Cover 4, both of which this route concept is designed to punish. Watch the flow of the middle linebacker post-snap, as his drop angle tells you which seam route will be open against Cover 3 or Tampa 2 zone drops. Corners playing off with outside leverage indicate zone coverage, which opens up the seam and corner routes against Cover 2 flat defenders who cannot cover both the flat and the vertical threat. If the defense shows man coverage with a deep half safety rotating late, expect the corner route from the slot to be the primary answer since it attacks the seam between the corner and safety. Watch for a lurking user-controlled linebacker sitting in the passing lanes on the trips side, since a smart defender there can jump the inside seam route and bait an interception if the quarterback does not process the coverage rotation quickly.

Usage Tips

Use this play on early downs or obvious pass downs when you expect a two high or three deep shell rather than tight man coverage. Pre-snap, identify whether the safeties are shaded to the trips side, since that tells you which vertical route will have the most room to work against a single deep defender. Hot route the backside X to a quick out or slant if you see man coverage with no help over the top, turning this into an instant man beater against Cover 1 or Cover 0 looks. Pair this play with Curl Flat or Stick in your play-calling sequence to keep the defense guessing between shallow zone-clearing routes and the deep four verts shot. Against Cover 3, key on the middle of field safety and throw off his leverage, hitting the seam route away from his depth for a big chunk play.
