Breakdown

PA Deep In runs out of Pistol Trips with a play-action fake to hold the second level before the QB works the pocket. The backside single receiver runs a deep in that sits over the middle as the primary read, while the outside trips receiver clears vertically down the sideline to occupy the corner and safety. From the trips side, the slot runs a deep crosser working opposite the in-breaker and the inside receiver checks down to the flat, giving a full-field high-low read. This is a zone beater at its core, using the deep crosser and deep in to stress the seams and hooks left open by linebackers biting on the run fake.

Defensive Reads

Identify two-high safety shells pre-snap since Cover 2 and Cover 4 leave natural void between the linebacker hook zones and the deep safeties, which is exactly where the deep in sits down. Watch for a Mike or Sam linebacker sitting in a hook zone post-snap, as a disciplined user lurk defender can rob the deep in throw if the QB stares it down too long. Man coverage with no safety help over the top gets exposed by the deep crosser working away from trail technique defenders, so look for press-man alignment on the outside receivers as a green light. Cover 3 with a single high safety is the toughest matchup for this concept because the deep in runs directly into the middle third defender, so be ready to check down to the flat route immediately if you see single-high shells rotate post-snap. Blitz-heavy fronts that bring extra rushers can be countered by the quick flat route as a hot route outlet, since play-action naturally slows down edge pressure and buys time against a delayed blitz.

Usage Tips

Check the safety depth pre-snap, if both safeties sit at 10-12 yards you are likely seeing a two-high shell that opens up the deep in behind the linebackers. Sell the run fake by holding the RB action and letting the play-action animation play out fully before your first progression, this freezes underneath defenders and creates the throwing window. Your first read should be the deep in crossing to the middle of the field, then work backside to the flat route if a robber or hook defender jumps the in-breaker. Use this play on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and medium) when defenses are still respecting the run out of Pistol personnel. Pair this with HB Dive or HB Zone Wk earlier in a drive to bait linebackers into faster run reads, then dial up PA Deep In to hit the window over the middle once they start crashing downhill.
