Read Option out of Pistol Trips is a base run play built around a zone read mesh between the QB and HB, with the three trips receivers running off vertical stems to clear out the perimeter defenders. The offensive line executes zone blocking steps toward the play side while the QB reads the edge defender to decide between handing off on the give path or pulling it and keeping outside. This is a run play designed to attack light boxes and force conflict defenders to misplay their assignment.
Watch the play side defensive end or outside linebacker before the snap, since this play lives and dies on whether that defender crashes down or stays home on the QB. Attacking teams that key the RB with linebackers can get gashed if the QB pulls the ball on the keep read. Heavy blitz packages that send extra defenders off the edge can blow up the mesh point before the QB has time to read, so check for overload pressure looks pre-snap. Zone coverages with safeties rotating down into the box will clog cutback lanes, making this play tougher to hit for big yardage against 2 high shells that roll to single high post-snap. Man coverage on the trips receivers can leave numbers even in the box, which is the ideal shell to attack with this concept.
Check the box count before the snap and only run this into 6 or fewer defenders in the box for a numbers advantage.
Identify the read defender on the play side edge and manually control the QB through the mesh point to actually execute the give or keep decision instead of letting the CPU logic take over.
Use the trips side vertical releases to hold the corners and safety in place, which opens up cutback lanes if the defense rotates late.
Pair this with HB Dive or HB Zone Wk in the same set to keep defenders guessing between inside zone hits and the perimeter keep option.
Best called on early downs or short yardage situations where defenses are more likely to sit in base fronts rather than nickel or dime looks.
