Breakdown

Mtn Seam Y Z-Choice lines up out of Pistol Y Off Trips with a receiver motioning across the formation before the snap, creating a trips look to one side. Post snap, the seam route climbs straight up the hash from the slot, the Y (TE) runs a choice route breaking outside near the sideline off the trips side, and the two outside receivers on the far side run a deep out and a comeback stacked on top of each other for a natural clear out and man beater combo. The primary read starts with the seam route against the middle of the field, then works to the Y choice route which reads the defender leverage and settles or breaks accordingly, giving you built in answers against both man and zone coverage.

Defensive Reads

Watch the safety rotation after the motion, if the safety cheats over to the trips side it signals man coverage and the seam route becomes a high value throw. Key the flat defender or nickel corner on the Y choice route, if he sinks too deep the choice route settles for a quick underneath completion. Beware of a robber or lurk defender sitting in the middle of the field against zone shells, since this can undercut the seam route if the quarterback stares it down too long. Man coverage with no safety help over the top gets exposed by the seam route, but two high safety shells with underneath zone defenders can clog the passing lanes and force the checkdown. Blitz heavy fronts can be an issue since the seam route needs time to develop, so identify pre-snap blitz indicators like linebackers creeping up or safeties disguising a rotation to the line of scrimmage.

Usage Tips

Use the pre-snap motion to identify if the defense shifts a linebacker or DB, which tells you if you are facing man or zone coverage before the ball is even snapped.

If the defense shows single high safety, hit the seam route immediately since the middle of the field is stressed vertically with no help over the top.

Against zone coverage, let the Y choice route sit down in the soft spot between the underneath and deep zones for an easy completion.

Pair this play with Four Verticals or PA Slot Seam in the same set to keep defenses honest on seam concepts, then dial up RPO Alert Slant or RPO Glance Post when they start jumping the seam route.

Best called on second and medium or third and short to medium since the choice route gives you a built in sight adjustment based on the leverage of the defender.
