Pistol Trips Open takes the depth compromise of the Pistol backfield and pairs it with 10 personnel, putting four receivers on the field with the back set directly behind the quarterback rather than offset. The "Open" tag is the key differentiator: instead of a tight end attached or a bunched trips look, you get a wide trips side with the single receiver detached and isolated to the weak side, which strips the defense of any easy overload and forces them to declare strength before the snap. Compared to tighter Pistol sets, you lose the extra blocker but gain a genuine four-vertical threat and a run game that still reads like an under-center scheme thanks to the back's alignment behind the QB.
The alignment does the heavy lifting on your reads. Trips forces most zone shells to spin coverage toward the three-receiver side, which leaves the isolated X in a true one-on-one, and that is exactly why the set carries Return X Choice Special and 61 X Choice. Those give you a live option route against whichever leftover defender the coverage rotation strands on the backside. On the trips side, RNS Army Mesh, RNS Houston Mesh, and Levels Switch stack traffic in the short middle and flood the intermediate hook zones, while Verticals and 60 Go attack the numbers when the defense plays a single high shell with only one deep help defender over three vertical stems.
The run game is where the SLWR tag matters. HB Dive, HB Zone, Wide Zone, Wide Zone Wk, and HB Counter all run out of the Pistol depth, meaning no directional tell from an offset back, and the four-wide spacing pulls a defender or two out of the box. Add Speed Option Wk and the gadget-tagged looks and you have a set that punishes defenses who commit an extra body to the run fit. HB Slip Screen and HB Draw serve as your pressure answers, and PA Deep In plus PA Pin Deep let you sell the zone action before hitting the vacated intermediate windows.
Read the safety count before the snap: one high means go to Verticals or 60 Go and attack the seam between the trips receivers, two high means work Levels Switch or the mesh concepts underneath into the vacated middle.
Watch how the defense aligns to the isolated weak side receiver. If he draws no help and the corner is off, run Return X Choice Special or 61 X Choice and let the option route win on the leverage.
Against heavy blitz tendencies, keep HB Slip Screen and HB Draw in your rotation. The four-wide spacing means blitzing defenders vacate the exact space the screen attacks.
Use the RNS and gadget plays on early downs to punish defenses that overcommit to the trips side, then come back to Speed Option Wk or Wide Zone Wk with the same alignment so the pre-snap look stays identical.
Hot route the back to a flat or angle route on Verticals and Smash to give yourself a checkdown, and block him on PA Deep In and PA Pin Deep since those need the extra count to develop.
