RNS Houston Mesh out of Pistol Trips Open sends the two inside trips receivers on crossing mesh routes underneath, one working left to right and one right to left, creating a natural rub to shake man defenders. The backside single receiver runs a deep vertical shot up the sideline while the outermost trips receiver clears vertically up the seam, and the back releases on a flat route underneath to give the quarterback a checkdown outlet. This is a man beater built on the classic mesh concept, with the primary read starting on the mesh crossers for a quick rhythm throw, progressing to the seam clear-out route, and using the flat route as the outlet against blitz pressure.
Defensive Reads
Man coverage with trailing corners is the biggest weakness here since the mesh crossers create natural traffic that breaks tackling angles and separation for man defenders. Watch for a user-controlled linebacker sitting in the mesh window, since that defender can jump the crossing routes and undercut the quick throw before it develops. Zone coverage with underneath defenders sitting flat-footed can bait the quarterback into the mesh, so sinking linebackers into the crossing lanes takes away the primary read and forces a checkdown to the flat. Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells with a deep safety rotated toward the trips side can take away the backside vertical route, forcing the quarterback back to the shorter mesh and flat combo. Blitz packages that bring pressure off the edge opposite the trips side attack the quarterback before the mesh fully develops, so disguised blitzes with late linebacker drops into the crossing routes are effective at shutting this down.
Usage Tips
Call this on early downs or third and short when you expect man coverage since the mesh crossers are designed to create natural picks against man defenders trailing in coverage.
Pre-snap, check for man indicators like corners lined up tight to the trips receivers and a single high safety, which signals the mesh concept will have room to work underneath.
If the defense shows two deep safeties or soft zone, hot route the flat back into a quicker option or look immediately to the deep vertical route since zone defenders will sit in the mesh window.
Combine this with RNS Army Mesh or RNS Streak X Shallow from the same set so the defense sees similar mesh action but has to respect different vertical shots off it, keeping linebackers honest.
Use motion or a quick pre-snap read on the deep safety to decide between the mesh crossers and the backside vertical, since a rolled safety to the trips side opens up the single receiver deep.
