Breakdown

Double Out lines up from Pistol Trips Open with 10 personnel, and the diagram shows a two-man route concept out of the trips side while the backside X runs a deep corner route. The near trips receiver breaks outside on a quick out, the middle trips receiver runs a vertical seam straight up the numbers, and the outside trips receiver releases and settles as a checkdown option underneath. The backside X on the single side runs an angled out breaking into the sideline, giving a two-level stretch on both sides of the field. This is a zone beater built to attack the flat and hole defenders with the outs while the vertical seam route occupies deep zone defenders, and the primary read starts with the backside out route before working to the trips side seam and flat combination.

Defensive Reads

Watch the flat defenders and corners pre-snap since Cover 2 and Cover 4 shells with soft corners are vulnerable to the quick out routes on both sides. Key the middle linebacker or safety depth because the vertical seam route from the trips slot will expose defenses that roll a single high safety without deep help in the middle. User the underneath zone defender or nickel corner to jump the backside out route, since that throw comes out fast and is the primary read against zone. Look for Cover 3 sky or buzz rotations, as the flat defender flying out late can undercut the out routes if timed correctly. Man coverage with underneath help can bracket the checkdown receiver, so blitzing off the edge to disrupt the quarterback's first read window on the backside out is effective against this concept.

Usage Tips

Read the corners and flat defenders before the snap to see if they are sitting on outs or bailing into deep thirds.

Use the backside out route as your first read against Cover 3 or Cover 4 since it settles quickly outside the numbers for an easy completion.

Hot route the checkdown receiver on a hitch or quick option if you see man coverage press at the line to give yourself a rhythm throw.

Pair this play with 61 X Choice or Z Spot in your play-calling sequence to keep defenses guessing between quick outs and option routes from the same trips look.

Best used on second and medium or third and short since the out routes convert quickly and the seam route punishes defenses that crash down on the sticks.
