Key on defensive line slants and gap exchanges, since a hard slant into the play side gap can beat inside zone by shooting the puller lane before blocks are set. Look for user-controlled defenders flowing down quickly from depth, as a spy or lurk defender crashing the mesh point is the main threat to blow this run up for a loss. This run struggles against heavy run blitz packages and 46 style fronts but has success against base 4-3 and 3-4 looks where linebackers are reading run instead of attacking gaps.
Usage Tips
Use pre-snap motion or a quick glance at the box count to confirm the defense is not stacked with an extra defender in the box before snapping this run.
Identify if the defense is in a 4-3 or 3-4 front, since inside zone hits differently against a shaded nose tackle compared to a true 3 technique.
Pair this play with HB Slam or HB Dive in the same set to keep defenders guessing between different run tracks out of the same Pistol Trips Open look.
Call this on early downs like first and ten or second and short to stay on schedule and set up play-action shots later such as PA Deep In or PA Pin Deep from the same formation.
