Breakdown

RNS Army Mesh out of Trips Open Pistol is a classic mesh concept built to beat man coverage with natural traffic underneath. The two inside receivers cross at a shallow depth, one settling in the middle of the field on a mesh sit while the other continues across to the opposite flat, and the two outside vertical routes stretch the defense to hold safeties and remove underneath help. The primary read progression starts with the mesh crossers working man leverage, then climbs to the vertical shots on the right side if the mesh gets picked off or clogged.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing man coverage with corners aligned tight on the outside receivers, since that confirms the mesh crossers will get a clean rub and open up. Watch the middle linebacker depth before the snap, because a linebacker sitting shallow in a hook zone can undercut the mesh sit route and jump the first read. Post-snap, key the safety over the vertical routes on the right side, since a single high safety rotating late signals Cover 1 or Cover 3 and tells you to climb the progression to the verticals. Man beater coverage like Cover 0 or Cover 1 struggles against the mesh crossers because defenders have to fight through traffic, so expect this to be your go to shell beater. Zone heavy shells like Cover 4 or Cover 2 with disciplined linebacker drops shut this down since the mesh sit sits right in the shallow zone where a zone defender can sink and read the quarterback's eyes.

Usage Tips

Use this against any coverage showing man leverage on the inside receivers, since the mesh crossers naturally create rubs that shake defensive backs.

Check pre-snap for blitz dogs or a linebacker sitting in the shallow zone, since a spy or hook defender can jump the mesh sit route and blow up your first read.

Hot route the outside vertical routes to a comeback or hitch against soft zone shells like Cover 3 if you see the corners sitting deep off the line.

Pair this call with RNS Army or RNS Houston Mesh to keep the same shell look while varying route depth, forcing defenders to guess mesh timing snap to snap.

Best used on second and medium or third and short where the quick mesh settle gives you a safe completion, but keep the verticals ready as a shot play if the safety bites down.
