Return Go Swap out of Pistol Trips Open is a vertical stretch pass concept built to attack man coverage on the outside. The backside receiver runs a solo go route up the sideline for a one-on-one deep shot, while the trips side swaps releases: the inside slot pushes vertical then breaks outside on a corner route, and the outside receiver cuts underneath on a shallow crossing route to the flat. The primary read progression starts with the backside iso go route against man coverage, then works to the swap corner route on the trips side if the deep shot is not there, with the shallow crosser as the checkdown against underneath zone or blitz pressure.
Watch the cornerback technique on the backside go route, a press alignment with no safety help over the top is a green light to throw it deep immediately. Identify the deep safety rotation after the snap, if both safeties bail into deep quarters or Cover 2, the go routes are covered and you must work the swap corner and shallow crosser underneath. Key the flat defender or nickel corner on the trips side, if he sinks with the shallow crosser instead of jumping the underneath window, the corner route behind him becomes the money throw. Look for linebacker spacing at the snap, a blitz or nano blitz look means the shallow crosser becomes a quick outlet to beat pressure before the go routes develop. Track any lurking defender sitting in the intermediate middle of the field, since he can undercut the swap corner route if the quarterback stares it down too long.
Check the safety alignment before the snap, if you see a single high safety shaded toward the trips side, take the backside go route immediately since it signals man coverage on that island corner.
Use motion or a hot route on the shallow crosser to convert it into a quick option route against zone shells that sit soft underneath.
This play punishes Cover 1 and Cover 3 with press corners, so save it for third and long or two minute drill situations where you need an explosive gain over the top.
Pair this call with RNS Houston Mesh or Middle Slant earlier in a series to bait linebackers into shallow drops, then hit the swap corner route once the defense starts jumping underneath routes.
If the defense shows two high safeties pre snap, be ready to bail to the shallow crosser instead of forcing the go route into a deep half defender.
