Breakdown

Verticals out of Pistol Trips Open sends four receivers vertically up the field, with the three trips receivers releasing straight upfield and the backside single receiver also pushing a vertical seam, while the running back stays in to check the backfield or leak out late as a fifth option. This is a classic Cover 2 and Cover 3 beater built to stress deep safeties and overload one side of the field with multiple vertical stems. The primary read progression starts outside to the boundary vertical, then works to the deep trips seam routes, and finally checks down to the running back if the pocket collapses before any window opens downfield.

Defensive Reads

Watch pre-snap safety depth, if both safeties sit at 10 to 12 yards with outside leverage corners this indicates Cover 2 and the deep middle should be your priority read. If the free safety rotates to the middle of the field pre-snap this signals Cover 3, look immediately for the seam route that splits the deep third defender from the flat defender. Post-snap, key the underneath linebackers, if they sink deep into the throwing lanes on a Tampa 2 look this can take away the inside seam and force you to the outside boundary vertical instead. Beware of Cover 4 or Cover 6 shells with press corners, since matched deep zones with physical press can disrupt the release timing on all four verticals and delay the route stems. Identify user-controlled safeties lurking in the middle of the field, since a smart user will sit on the inside seam and jump the route if the quarterback stares it down too long.

Usage Tips

Attack this play against two high safety shells since four verts forces both safeties to pick a side and creates a natural void down the middle or on the numbers.

Pre-snap, check for a single high safety rotation, if you see Cover 3 identify the deep third defender and target the seam route that lands between the corner and safety.

Hot route the running back into a quick flare or shallow drag if you diagnose zone coverage with soft linebackers, this gives you a checkdown against a Cover 2 shell that squeezes the verticals.

Pair this play with Levels or Z Spot in the same set to keep defenses honest, since those concepts punish teams that sit on the deep routes after seeing verticals earlier in the drive.

Use this on early down and medium to long distance situations when you have play clock to let the routes develop, since verticals need time for the seams to clear the underneath defenders.
