RNS Hitches is a quick-game pass concept out of Trips Open Pistol with 10 personnel, designed to attack soft zone coverage and give the quarterback a fast, high-percentage progression. The lone receiver runs a vertical release up the boundary as a backside outlet, while the trips side shows a deep out breaking to the sideline from the slot and two stacked hitch routes from the inner receivers that settle at roughly 5-6 yards. Blocking is standard pass protection with no visible screen or run action, making this a straight dropback quick-hitter built to beat off coverage and zone drops rather than press man. The primary read starts with the near hitch, works to the second hitch underneath, and works to the deep out on the trips side if the corner sinks under.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check safety depth and corner alignment on the trips side, since soft zone shells like Cover 3 or Cover 4 with off corners are where the hitches sit down easily for free yardage. Watch for user-controlled defenders sitting in the short hitch windows, particularly a spy or a rat linebacker crashing down, which signals the offense should look to the deep out instead. Man coverage with press corners on the trips receivers is the best counter, since the hitches have no natural separation move built in against tight man technique. Zone blitzes that bring extra rushers while dropping a linebacker into the shallow hitch area can bait the quarterback into a bad read, so track linebacker eye discipline after the snap. If the deep out route is being undercut by a flat defender or nickel corner sinking hard, the underneath hitches become the higher-value target on that snap.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing zone with linebackers sitting in short drops or off man with a cushion, both of which the hitches exploit for easy completions.
Use hot routes to convert the backside single receiver into a slant or drag if you see man coverage isolated on him, since the vertical alone won't create separation against tight man.
This is a prime call on second or third and short to medium distance where the sticks match the hitch depth, letting you take a guaranteed conversion instead of forcing a deeper shot.
Pair RNS Hitches with RNS Streak X Shallow or Verticals in the same set to keep the defense honest, since both plays start from the same Trips Open Pistol look but attack downfield if the defense sits low expecting hitches.
Get the ball out on time to the first hitch defender that opens a throwing lane, since holding the ball invites underneath zone defenders to jump the route.
