Trips Left Open is the 10 personnel spread variant of Pistol, and the "Open" tag matters: instead of stacking three receivers tight to the left with a tight end anchoring the right side, you get a true 3x1 look with the backside receiver isolated on an island. The quarterback sits in the shortened pistol depth with the halfback directly behind him, which preserves downhill run angles on HB Dive, Close HB Dive, HB Counter, and HB Slam while keeping the read mechanics of Read Option and the full RPO menu intact. Because there is no tight end on the field, the defense has to declare its strength pre-snap, and you can count the box instantly: four defenders over three blockers to the trips side usually means the numbers are in your favor on the single receiver side.
The trips alignment itself is what makes the passing concepts hum. Flood, Flood Post, Out N Under, Inside Smash, and Y Stick all build high low and horizontal stretches out of the same three man surface, so a defender in Cover 3 or Cover 4 has to make a decision he cannot win on every snap. Mesh Dig and Scat give you the rub work that shreds Cover 1 and Cover 2 Man, while Four Verticals and PA Verticals punish single high looks when the middle of the field defender gets pulled by the seam runners. The isolated X receiver on the right is the real prize: put your best route runner there, motion the trips side to draw the rotation, and you have a one on one that you can attack with a hot routed fade, slant, or comeback without any help defender within fifteen yards.
The RPO cluster (RPO Alert Bubble, RPO Zone Alert Bubble, RPO Read Bubble) and Counter Alert Flat turn the trips bubble into a conflict read against overhang defenders, which is why this set is tagged Gadget and SLWR. Add the play action package (PA Boot, PA Ctr Waggle, PA Deep In) plus HB Draw and HB Slip Screen as change ups, and you have a set that runs a complete spread offense from one alignment without ever tipping run or pass by personnel.
Count the box before you snap. Four or fewer defenders inside means run HB Dive, Close HB Dive, or Read Option. Five or more means pull the trigger on the bubble side of an RPO.
Against single high, attack the isolated receiver with a hot routed fade or comeback and check the middle of field defender's alignment. If he cheats to the trips side, the one on one is free.
Against Cover 3 and Cover 4, lean on Flood, Flood Post, and Inside Smash so the curl flat defender has to pick between the flat and the sit route behind him.
Motion the inside trips receiver across the formation to identify man versus zone, then use that read to call Mesh Dig or Scat against man and Y Stick or Stick against zone.
Keep HB Draw and HB Slip Screen in the rotation on third and medium. Both punish aggressive interior pressure and reset the down after the defense starts sending extra rushers.
Block the halfback or slide protection when you see a five man front, since this set has no tight end help against A gap and edge overload looks.
