Four Verticals out of Trips Left Open (Pistol, 10 personnel) sends all four eligible receivers vertically up the field to stretch the defense from sideline to sideline. The two outside receivers run straight seam routes up the numbers, the inside slot receiver from the trips side runs a vertical that angles inside before breaking back outside deep, and the single receiver runs a clean vertical seam as well. This is a pure man and zone beater dropback pass with no play-action or blocking tag shown, designed to attack Cover 2 and Cover 3 by overloading the deep zones and creating one-on-one matchups against man coverage. The primary read progression starts with the middle seam route from the bent vertical, then works to the field side outside vertical based on the safety rotation and leverage.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, key the safety depth and alignment since two safeties sitting deep at 10 to 12 yards signals Cover 2 or Cover 4, while one safety in the middle of the field signals Cover 1 or Cover 3. Watch cornerback press alignment on the outside receivers because press man coverage tells you the corner will try to disrupt the vertical release, which favors the inside seam routes instead. Post-snap, track the middle linebacker or the deep third defender since a slow pedal or delayed drop opens the seam window for the bent vertical route before the safety can rotate over. Look for user-controlled safeties sitting in a lurk position at the intermediate level, since a smart user will jump the seam route and bait the quarterback into a turnover. This play struggles against a two high shell with disciplined deep safeties who stay on top of the verticals and against Cover 4 quarters coverage where each deep defender has direct man match responsibility on a vertical stem.
Usage Tips
Use pre-snap motion or a hard count to identify if the defense is showing two deep safeties or rotating to single high before the snap. Against Cover 2 shells, target the bent seam route in the middle of the field since it settles between the safeties and linebackers for a natural throwing window. Against Cover 3, work the field side vertical first since the flat defender and corner often have conflicting run-pass responsibilities that open a soft spot up top. Hot route the backside single receiver into a shallow drag or option route if the defense shows man coverage with no safety help, giving yourself a quick outlet against blitz looks. Pair this play with RPO Read Bubble or RPO Alert Bubble from the same set so the defense has to respect the quick game before you go over the top with verticals on a predictable down.
