Breakdown
HB Slam is a downhill dive run out of Pistol Trips Left Open, using 10 personnel to spread the defense with three receivers to the left and an isolated receiver backside. The diagram shows the running back taking a quick handoff and slamming it directly upfield through the interior of the line, with the offensive line blocking straight ahead to move the defensive front off the ball. This is a north-south gap run designed to attack light boxes, and the primary read is the frontside gap first, then a cutback lane if the defense flows hard to the play call side.
Defensive Reads
Look for a stacked box or an extra defender crashing down pre-snap, since that immediately signals HB Slam will not have room to operate. Key the mike linebacker's first step: if he fills the play side gap instantly, the cutback lane backside becomes the answer. Watch for user-controlled defenders spying the backfield or shooting a gap on a delayed blitz timing, since that can blow up the play before the back gets vertical. Against Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells with safeties staying deep, this run hits clean because the underneath defenders are outnumbered against the interior gaps. If the defense shows blitz with linebackers walked up inside pre-snap, expect a hot-route check or a bail to a quicker throw since the dive has no time to develop.
Usage Tips
Call HB Slam when the defense shows a light box, five defenders or fewer, since the Trips Left Open spread forces defenders out into coverage.
Check pre-snap for linebacker depth: if the mike and will are sitting shallow near the line, this play will get gummed up, so bail to a perimeter run or RPO instead.
Use HB Slam early in a series on first and second down to set up your play-action rollouts and RPO Read Bubble later in the drive, since the formation tips defenders to respect the pass first.
Pair this with HB Draw and Close HB Dive in your play-calling sequence so the defense cannot key on formation tendencies out of Trips Left Open.
Against man coverage looks with no extra run support, this hits fast, so snap it quickly and trust your line to seal the interior gaps.
