Close HB Dive out of Pistol Trips Left Open is a pure interior run play with no route concepts on the diagram, just a downhill dive for the HB. The three receivers to the trips side and the single receiver on the backside are uninvolved decoys who hold their vertical release stems to keep defenders honest, while the offensive line blocks straight ahead with the HB taking a direct handoff and hitting the A or B gap based on the alignment shown. This is a run play designed to punish light boxes and attack downhill through the middle before the defense can react to the pistol backfield action, with the primary read being the frontside gap and the initial double team or combo block at the point of attack.
Watch the box count before the snap: six or fewer defenders in the box means this dive should hit for positive yardage almost every time. Key the middle linebacker's depth and shoulder angle, since a downhill linebacker who is already leaning forward will beat the play to the mesh point and blow it up for a loss. Look at defensive tackle alignment on the interior; if the defense is running a bear front or heavy nose shade, the natural gap for the dive may be clogged and the HB will need to cut late. Man coverage on the perimeter receivers does not affect this play at all since there are no routes being run, so the real key is strictly the front seven's gap discipline. Zone blitzes or delayed linebacker stunts through the called gap are the biggest counter to this play, so if you see a defense repeatedly sending a linebacker on a delayed A gap shoot, mix in HB Counter or PA Boot to punish that aggression.
Use this play on early downs when you see a light box of six or fewer defenders in the run fit, since the dive attacks the interior gaps immediately without any misdirection to buy extra time. Check the middle linebacker depth pre snap: if he is stacked tight to the line expecting run, consider audibling to RPO Read Bubble or RPO Alert Bubble from this same set to make him pay for crashing down. Pair Close HB Dive with HB Counter and HB Draw in your play calling sequence so the defense cannot key on one gap or one tempo, forcing linebackers to hesitate on every snap. Run this on short yardage and goal line situations where a fast hitting, low risk gain is more valuable than a big play shot. If the defense shows a heavy blitz look pre snap with linebackers crowding the line, this play can still work since the quick mesh point gets the ball out before most blitzers arrive, but be ready to bail into a pass concept like Y Stick if the look screams all out pressure.
