Counter Alert Flat is a Pistol Trips Left Open run play built around a power counter scheme to the weak side, with an alert flat route tagged to the backside receiver as a built-in answer against overloaded fronts. The offensive line pulls to kick out the edge and lead through the hole while the trips receivers stay uninvolved as run blockers off screen, and the single backside X runs a quick flat route that can be hot read if the defense shows blitz or crashes hard on the counter action. Primary read progression starts with the counter lane up front, then bails to the flat route as the alert if pre-snap or post-snap pressure keys eliminate the run.
Pre-snap, check linebacker depth and box count: stacked boxes with linebackers crashing downhill are the primary trigger to bail into the flat alert. Watch the backside edge defender and any user-controlled defender flowing hard toward the counter action, since that flow opens the flat route for an easy pitch and catch. Odd fronts or defenses that key pulling linemen quickly and squeeze the counter lane will shut this run down, so respect fast-flow linebackers and disciplined defensive ends. Post-snap, if you see a linebacker or safety spying the counter path and not respecting the flat, the outlet throw is nearly automatic for a quick gain. Man coverage looks with no underneath flat defender get exposed the hardest, while zone shells with a cornerback sitting on the flat can jump the alert route if thrown late.
Use pre-snap motion or a quick glance at the box count to confirm the counter has a numbers advantage before the snap.
If the defense shows a heavy run blitz or an extra man crashing the point of attack, hot route or key the flat as your alert outlet instead of forcing the counter.
This play hits best on early downs (first and second and short to medium) when defenses are playing base run fronts rather than sub packages.
Pair this call with HB Counter and HB Dive from the same set to keep defenses honest on gap reads, then mix in PA Ctr Waggle off the same counter action to punish linebackers who key run too fast.
Against defenses that load the box versus Pistol run looks, sequence this after a few passing plays like Stick or Y Stick so the counter hits a lighter front.
