Breakdown

PA Verticals runs out of Pistol Trips Left Open with a play-action fake to hold the linebackers before the QB works the pocket. From the trips side, the two inside receivers push vertical seams while the outside trips receiver bends his route toward the numbers on a deep out, and the backside single receiver runs a skinny post from the boundary. The lone back checks protection then releases on a shallow crossing route underneath as the outlet. This is a classic four verticals shell designed to attack both Cover 2 (splitting the safeties) and Cover 3 (overloading the middle third), with the primary read progression working from the two inside seam routes to the backside post and finally down to the underneath crosser if the deep routes are covered.

Defensive Reads

Look for two deep safeties pre-snap, this indicates Cover 2 and tells you to attack the seams before the safeties can convert to close the throwing window. A single deep safety pre-snap signals Cover 3 or Cover 1, which means the backside skinny post and the seam route away from the rotation are your best answers. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they sink hard into their zone drops without honoring the play-action fake, the underneath crosser will be your quickest answer. Identify press corners on the trips side pre-snap, since press coverage on the outside receiver can disrupt his release into the deep out and delay the timing of that route. Post-snap, track the user-controlled defender for a lurking safety or linebacker sitting in the middle of the field, as this is the primary threat to the skinny post and inside seam throws.

Usage Tips

Check the safety alignment before the snap, if you see two high safeties widen your seam routes with a streak or seam hot route to split them for an explosive gain.

Use the play-action fake to freeze linebackers on early down situations like first and ten or second and medium, since it slows down underneath defenders and opens throwing lanes to the seams.

If the defense shows single high safety, target the skinny post from the backside single receiver since it attacks the void behind the middle linebacker and in front of the free safety.

Hot route the running back to a chip and release if you are facing heavy pressure looks, this buys the extra half second needed for verticals to develop downfield.

Pair this play with Y Stick or Mesh Dig earlier in a drive to bait linebackers into sitting on shorter routes, then hit PA Verticals when they start jumping underneath throws.
