PA Ctr Waggle is a play-action bootleg out of Pistol Trips Left Open that sells a center run fake before rolling the quarterback to the boundary. Off the fake, the two inside trips receivers push vertical up the numbers with a slight stagger (one breaking outside, one climbing straight up), the outside trips receiver runs a deep vertical up the sideline, and the tight end or attached receiver from the boundary side runs a shallow drag across the formation that settles as the waggle flat route. The primary read progression starts with the drag/flat route as the quarterback rolls out, then works to the intermediate breaking route in the trips stack, and finally to the deep vertical as a shot play if the boot fully freezes the defense. This is a play-action man beater designed to exploit linebackers and safeties who bite on the run fake.
Defensive Reads
Watch for defensive ends or outside linebackers who stay home on the play side, since a disciplined edge defender who does not bite on the run fake can contain the waggle and force a bad throw on the run. If the defense shows Cover 2 or Cover 4 with two deep safeties who do not crash on the fake, the drag route becomes riskier because underneath zone defenders are already sitting and reading the backfield. Blitzes off the boot side, especially overload pressure or a nano blitz from the edge the quarterback is rolling toward, are the biggest threat since they can hit the quarterback before routes develop. Look for a linebacker spy or a defender sitting in the flat zone shallow, that indicates the defense has diagnosed the waggle concept and will squeeze the drag route while playing the roll. Man coverage with inside leverage on the trips stack routes is where this play hurts defenses most, since the play-action freeze creates natural separation on the vertical breaking routes.
Usage Tips
Run this on early downs like first and ten or second and medium when the defense is respecting the run game, since the center fake needs credibility to freeze linebackers. Check the safety alignment pre-snap, a single high safety or two deep shells that stack the box are ideal because it means fewer defenders are reading the backfield. As you roll out with the quarterback, immediately key the flat defender and underneath linebackers, if they bite on the run fake the drag route to the boot side is open instantly for an easy completion. Pair this play with HB Dive or Close HB Dive earlier in a drive to get defenders keying run fits from the same Pistol look, then dial up PA Ctr Waggle to punish an aggressive front seven. Use the deep vertical from the outside trips receiver as a shot play against Cover 3 or Cover 1 when the corner is playing off, since the rollout naturally gives the quarterback extra time to climb the pocket and let that route develop.
