Mtn HB Stretch is an outside zone run out of Singleback Deuce Close with 12 personnel, using pre-snap motion to shift the numbers at the point of attack before the snap. The offensive line and both tight ends flow laterally to the play side, stretching the defense horizontally while the HB reads blocks from the mesh point outward looking for a crease to cut upfield. This is a zone run designed to beat gap-heavy defenses and overly aggressive downhill fronts, with the primary read progression going from the play side edge to the cutback lane as the HB presses the line and reacts to the first color he sees in the hole.
Watch for a defender shadowing the motion man pre-snap, which signals man coverage and tells you the box count will hold after motion. Key the play side defensive end and outside linebacker leverage, if they crash hard down inside the cutback lane opens for a big gain. Identify odd fronts or 3-4 looks with two gap linemen, these can clog zone stretch lanes and force the HB to bounce it outside prematurely. Look for a user controlled linebacker flowing fast to the play side edge, a good defender will spy the stretch and force a cutback into pursuit. Check safety depth before the snap, if a safety is cheating down into the box expect an alley defender to fill quickly and shut down the bounce read.
Use the pre-snap motion to identify if the defense is playing man or zone based on whether a defender follows the motion man across the formation.
Run this out of neutral downs like 1st and 10 or 2nd and medium so the defense cannot sell out against the run.
If the defense shows a stacked box with linebackers creeping to the line, consider bailing into a play-action shot from this same formation instead.
Pair this with Mtn Duo and HB Wham to keep defenders honest on the interior while still threatening the edge with zone stretch.
Manually control the play side tight end or fullback early in the snap to seal the edge defender if the CPU blocking AI whiffs on the edge.
Alternate this with PA Boot Corner Post or PA Drag Wheel from the same set so linebackers cannot sit on the run action after a few stretch calls.
