Slant Stick out of Shotgun Wing Slot Wk (12 personnel) shows a three-man route combo to the trips side: the outside receiver runs a slant to the middle of the field, the tight end in the slot runs a stick route that sits down and works outside, and the inline TE runs a corner route stretching the flat defender vertically. The backside X receiver runs a deep dig away from the concept, giving you a field-stretching outlet if the boundary is left uncovered. This is a stick concept, one of the most efficient man and zone beaters in the game, and the primary read progression starts with the stick (hot against blitz), then works to the slant against man leverage, then to the corner route against soft zone drops.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check the flat defender depth and the corner leverage on the trips side, a soft corner shading inside opens the corner route immediately. If the slot defender walks up to blitz, expect the offense to hot route the stick, so user your linebacker or nickel to jump the stick route sit spot. Cover 3 zone drops leave a natural window between the curl-flat defender and deep third corner, which the stick route is designed to exploit, so rotate a robber underneath if you suspect this concept. Man coverage with no safety help over the slant is the biggest vulnerability, use a lurking linebacker or spy to close that inside throwing lane. Watch for the backside dig route on any coverage rotation toward the trips side, a single high safety who bites on the stick concept leaves the deep middle exposed.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, identify whether the defense is showing a single high safety or two high shell, since stick concepts thrive against both but the corner route only wins versus zone with a vacated flat.
Use the stick route as your built-in hot route against blitz looks, it settles quickly and gives the QB a rhythm throw if the slot defender crashes downhill.
Against man coverage, hot route the backside X into a quick out or slant to create a two-way go and force the defense to declare help over the top.
This play pairs well with RPO Peek Slant and RPO Glance Post from the same set since the run action and route stems look identical at the snap, keeping linebackers honest.
Best called on third and short to third and medium, the stick concept gives multiple answers against both zone drop depth and man leverage without needing a huge gain to convert.
