Defensive Reads
Key the playside defensive end or edge defender first since he is the direct read for the QB give or keep decision on this play. Watch for user-controlled defenders flying downhill on the mesh point, as a disciplined user read defender can blow up both options if he stays patient and doesn't commit early. Against Cover 3 or Cover 1 shells with the safety rotated away from the sweep side, this play hits hard because the extra gap defender is removed from the edge. If the defense shows an overload blitz or edge pressure package pre-snap, expect the read defender to be replaced by a blitzer, which can speed up the QB decision and create a negative play if he doesn't get the ball out quickly. Look for linebackers flowing hard to the sweep side post-snap, since a QB keep read into the vacated backside gap can turn into an explosive gain if the second level over pursues.
Usage Tips
Use pre-snap motion or a quick glance at the defensive end and outside linebacker alignment to predict the read before the snap, since a wide 9-technique end usually signals a keep read while a crashing end signals the give.
Call this out of 12 personnel on early downs when you want to establish gap integrity issues, then follow it up with Mtn Buck Sweep or RPO Buck Sweep Peek to keep the same run action but adjust the constraint.
Against fast-flow linebackers who key the mesh point, pair this with Power Read or Read Option to force the defense to respect multiple gap schemes out of the same personnel and formation look.
If the defense shows a heavy box with 8 in the box pre-snap, check to RPO Peek Slant or RPO Glance Post from the same set to punish the numbers advantage in the passing game instead of forcing the run.
On the QB keep, get your eyes upfield immediately and look to set up a pitch or cutback since the edge defender who was read has already been beaten to the outside.
