Mtn HB Wheel is a motion-based play-action pass out of Shotgun Wing Slot Wk that puts the HB on a wheel route out of the backfield after motion, stacking a natural pick with the outside receiver on a deep vertical. The two outside routes push vertically to clear the top of the defense while the middle receiver runs a drag underneath from the opposite side, giving the quarterback a built in checkdown against a blitz. This is a man beater at its core, since the wheel route exploits linebackers and slower defenders who try to carry the HB out of the backfield, but the vertical stems also stretch zone defenders if the flat is left uncovered.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, check if the defense shifts a linebacker or nickel defender toward the HB motion, since that indicates man coverage and a green light for the wheel route. Watch for a deep half safety rotating toward the wheel side after the snap, which tells you zone coverage is in play and the vertical routes should be used to hold that safety while the drag route becomes the primary target. If the defense shows Cover 3 or Cover 4 with safeties staying deep and outside corners squatting on the sideline, expect the wheel to be walled off and prioritize the underdrag or checkdown instead. Man coverage with a slower linebacker assigned to the HB is the biggest vulnerability of this play, so attack that leverage immediately once the ball is snapped. Be alert for a blitz off the edge on the HB's original side, since the motion can leave that gap unprotected and force a quick decision before the wheel route develops.
Usage Tips
Use the HB motion pre-snap to identify man versus zone: if a defender follows the HB across the formation, you have a man beater and should target the wheel route once it clears the traffic near the line.
Look for a linebacker or safety cheating toward the motion man before the snap, since that usually signals a blitz or a man match assignment that the wheel route can exploit.
Hot route the drag runner to a deeper crossing route if you see a lot of underneath zone traffic clogging the middle of the field.
This play works best on second and medium or third and long when defenses expect a dropback pass and are more likely to play zone coverage that misjudges the HB release.
Pair this play with Mtn Read Option or Mtn Buck Sweep Read Opt from the same set so the defense respects run action from the same personnel, making them slower to react to the wheel route once you call this play.
