This is a straightforward zone run play, not a play-action or RPO variant, and the primary read progression is playside gap first, then bounce or cutback based on defensive flow and linebacker fits.
Defensive Reads
Watch linebacker depth before the snap, if they are stacked tight to the line expect an aggressive downhill fit that favors a cutback read. Check safety alignment, a single high safety often means the box is loaded and you should be ready to bounce the run outside if the interior gets clogged. Beware of nano blitzes from the edge, since Inside Zone blocking can struggle against a defender who shoots a gap untouched before the line sets its zone flow. Man coverage on the perimeter TE and slot usually signals man beater opportunities elsewhere in this set, so if you see man look, consider audibling to a play-action shot instead. Post-snap, track the play side linebacker's first step, if he flows hard playside the cutback lane opens up, if he sits and reads, stick with the called gap for positive yardage.
Usage Tips
Attack light boxes with six defenders or fewer since the two TE personnel does not always guarantee an extra blocker in the box if defense stays in base personnel.
Use pre-snap motion or shifts to identify if the defense is playing zone or man, since Inside Zone hits well against zone fronts that flow hard to one side.
Hot route the backside TE into a blocking assignment if you see a crashing defensive end, sealing the backdoor cutback lane for the HB.
Pair this play with RPO Zone Peek or RPO Zone Slant Peek from the same set to keep linebackers honest and force conflict reads on run fits.
Call this on early downs, first and second and short to medium yardage, to stay ahead of the chains and keep the defense guessing between run and RPO looks.
